1)According to Jared Diamond, what allowed Europeans to develop the power necessary to conquer (take over) large portions of the world?

Geography allowed the Europeans to develop the power necessary because they had the most efficient crops and animals that helped them to get guns, germs, and steel.

Since Europe and South Africa are so close in latitude they were able to grow the same things because it is like the same climate.

3)How did disease allow the Europeans to conquer the native populations in the Americasand in the Africancape?

Since Europeans were exposed to germs and diseases before they had an immunity to it because of their immune system and the native people to the lands had never really been exposed to these diseases so they were deathly to them.

4)The Europeans who settled the tropical areas of the African continent introduced killer germs to the native populations. However, Europeans also suffered from the effects of germs native to Africa. Describe how native African germs worked against the European settlers.

They were also introduced to new germs that they had never been exposed to so they were also losing their lives and also some fo their livestock.

5)How did the native Africans protect themselves from the germs that caused diseases such as Smallpox and Malaria? Give specific examples cited in the film.

They stopped smallpox because of the exposure over many many years and also they had vaccinations and when Malaria was a problem they learned how to prevent the infections that cause diseases like this. For example they would move to drier areas to get away from the bugs that carried these diseases.

6)How has the colonization (European take over) of Africa created countries filled with disease? Give specific examples from the film.

When the European took over they made the natives work for the natural rescores that the Europeans needed and when they moved the natives to larger places they would work and a lot of them worked so the disease was able to be spread because there was so many people in one place.

7)A)Wha is the number one public health problem in Zambia? B) Who are the people mainly affected by this?

Malaria is the number one public health problem and it mainly affected people under the age of 5.

8)How has disease made poverty (poorness) worse in many African countries such as Zambia?

The life expectancy has dropped crazily and now women are nursing sick people instead of working.

9)According to data from the film, how has Malaria effected the overall growth in Africa over the last 50 years?

Malaria caused a 1% negative drop every year in Africa so that has caused them to become poorer and poorer.

10)Describe how other tropical countries such as Malaysia and Singapore have developed rich economies despite having many of the same geographical and health problems faced by African nations.
