• What have you learned about Dinka culture? What markers from the film are representative of Dinka culture? Of American culture? What values do the Lost Boys hold? How do those values compare with your own?
The Dinka culture seems tough but they make the most of it and we just kind of take everything for granted. The Lost Boys make sure they hold on to the cultural traditions that they had in Africa and still have in America.
• What questions and fears do the Lost Boys have about life in the U.S.? What questions and fears would you have if you were moving to a new place? What differences do you see between Dinka culture and American culture? What are some of the challenges the Lost Boys encounter? How do they adapt to life in the United States (think in terms of both assimilation and acculturation? How do you think you would adapt to life in a new country?
They Dinka boys have a fear of being lonely because before they were with their people and now they are alone and not many people talk to them. If I were to move I would also be scared of being lonely and also I would be scared of getting lost in the towns. The lost boys have never seen so much food so they don't know what do do with it and they also ate with their hands which was very different.
• A benefit of this documentary lies in the opportunity to view our own (American) culture through the eyes of the Dinka. What aspects of our culture, which we may or may not take for granted, could potentially make immigrants feel marginalized or not a part of the American culture?
I feel like after watching this I see that we do take a lot of things for granted like stuff other countries don't have. When we don't say hi to someone it makes the foreigners feel like their not welcome but they don't know that we don't say high to some people.
• What scene(s) or ideas presented in teh film stood out to you? Why?
The scene where one of the boys runs away and then the cops arrested him and he wasn't mentally stable. This stuck with me because I feel like this might happen a lot.
• Was there anything that surprised you as you watched the film? Detail one thing that you took away from the film study.
I took away that all the things we don't value that much can be valued to someone else and we take to many things for granted.
